A new feature on the YouTube app is now letting users double tap to forward or rewind while viewing a video. The new feature that seems to have appeared on both Android and iOS versions of the app seems to have come either from a server side update, or for iOS via a recent update from the App Store.
According to a report by The Next Web, the feature has been reported by a number of Redditors with iOS and Android devices, but as of now is not available for everyone.
All we know is that the double tapping on either the left or right side of the screen will let you rewind or forward the video. However the speed or rate is only limited to 10 seconds. The same also works when the app in used in both portrait or landscape mode.
The new double tap feature may have arrived on iOS with a recent software update, one that added the ability to control videos from the lock screen while casting to Chromecast devices.
No matter which type of device you use, the scrubber at the bottom was not exactly user-friendly on smaller displays, which makes the new double tap to forward a much welcomed addition to video navigation.
On the iOS app the pop-up related video section made scrubbing through video a mess as it often triggers the related videos to slide up from the bottom, when viewed horizontally.
Recently, YouTube began rolling out social features within the YouTube application for Canadian users. Canada had been picked for the introduction of the new features, as Canadians on mobile phones share videos 15 per cent more than other countries.
