World leaders have strongly condemned the Barcelona terror attack claimed by the Islamic State group in which at least 13 people were killed and another hundred were injured on Thursday.
A van driver ploughed into crowds of pedestrians in Barcelona's picturesque Las Ramblas district. From US president Donald Trump to Russian president Vladimir Putin, leaders across the globe expressed solidarity with Spain.
Referring to an American general for his tough attitude towards terrorists, Donald Trump said:
Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy said the attack was "jihadist terrorism" which required a global response. "Today, the fight against terrorism is the principal priority for free and open societies like ours. It is a global threat and the response has to be global," Rajoy was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
UK prime minister Theresa May said, "I am sickened by the senseless loss of life in Barcelona today. The Foreign Office is working to establish if any British nationals were involved in this appalling incident and we are in close contact with the authorities in Spain, who have our full support."
"Following the attacks in Manchester and London, Spain stood alongside the British people. Tonight, Britain stands with Spain against the evil of terrorism."
British Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn said:
According to The Telegraph, the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said they were thinking of the victims of the "revolting attack" with "profound sadness". Russian president Vladimir Putin offered his condolences to the King of Spain, Felipe VI, over the attack, Russian state news agency TASS reported. "We strongly condemn this brutal and cynical crime against civilians," Putin said in his condolence message. "What has happened once again emphasises the need for the global community to join efforts to fight against the forces of terror," the Russian president was quoted as saying by TASS. Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev called the attacks a heinous crime.(Dmitry Medvedev: My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones in attack in Barcelona. And a speedy recovery to the victims. A terrorist attack in Barcelona, in the most crowded place in the city, is a monstrous crime. I am sure that we can defeat international terrorism only by the common efforts of the entire world community).
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, condemning the terror attack in Barcelona, said the United Nations stands in solidarity with the government and people of Spain in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, The UN News Centre reported. A statement issued by UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said, "He extends his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those killed and to the Government and people of Spain. He wishes a speedy recovery to those injured and hopes that those responsible for this heinous violence will be swiftly brought to justice." The president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said:
Juncker also issued a statement and said that "the Commission is at the full disposal of the authorities for any help or assistance necessary." Former United States president Barack Obama said:
French president Emmanuel Macron said, "All my thoughts and solidarity from France for the victims of the tragic attack in Barcelona. We will remain united and determined."
Sky News quoted the Spanish royal family in a statement as saying, "They are assassins, criminals who won't terrorise us. All of Spain is Barcelona."
