We join the people of Afghanistan in mourning the death of former Afghan President Sibghatullah Mojaddedi. As a tireless defender of democracy and valued partner for peace, Mr. Mojaddeddi served with honor as a leader in Afghan public life over the past four decades. His service included serving as chairman of the 2003 Loya Jirga that approved Afghanistan’s new Constitution and charted a new path of the future of Afghanistan. He will be missed by not only the Afghan people but the international community with whom he worked to advance peace and democracy.
