Press Releases: Remarks With Slovak President Andrej Kiska Before Their Meeting
Remarks
Michael R. Pompeo
Secretary of State
Presidential Palace
Bratislava, Slovakia
February 12, 2019

PRESIDENT KISKA: (As translated) I’m honored that after 20 years we are receiving state secretary in Slovakia. United States is important partner and ally to Slovakia. During our debate today, I want to focus on strengthening our cooperation in this modern world, and to also focus on big challenges such as climate change, migration, and terrorism, but also on economic growth. Even the biggest countries in the world cannot solve it by themselves – cannot solve these issues by themselves. We need to remove all the barriers, and that’s what we want to talk about today.

SECRETARY POMPEO: Thank you, Mr. President. Thanks for hosting me here. It’s truly an honor and a joy to be here with you and with your team. I look forward to our conversations today. It has been too long since America has been deeply engaged here, and I’m thrilled to be here physically to manifest President Trump’s commitment. He said to send his regards to you.

And know that we value the relationship between these two democracies, between these two places that care so deeply about freedom. It is important that we have strong defense, economic, and political ties between our two countries, and I’m very confident today that the work that we’ll do in addition to the work that our two teams have been doing over the past weeks will continue to deliver on that, not only for the people of Slovakia and America, but for others in the region as well.

PRESIDENT KISKA: Thank you.

SECRETARY POMPEO: Thank you.
