On April 30, Ambassador Nathan A. Sales, the State Department’s Coordinator for Counterterrorism, will welcome United Nations Assistant-Secretary-General Michele Coninsx and the team from the UN Counterterrorism Executive Directorate (CTED) to Washington, DC for its first official assessment visit of the United States. Ambassador Sales will be joined by National Security Council Senior Director for Counterterrorism and Threat Networks Chris Miller and Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Neumann.

The United States is a global leader in counterterrorism. We use and promote a rule-of-law approach to investigating and prosecuting terrorist offenders, countering terrorist travel and the financing of terrorism, and connecting federal, state, and local governments with civil society and the private sector to create a whole-of-society response to terrorist threats. We welcome this opportunity to showcase our counterterrorism efforts and to discuss how the U.S. government, through diplomatic engagement and foreign assistance, can help other Member States implement UN counterterrorism resolutions.

CTED was established in 2004 to help the UN Security Council’s Counterterrorism Committee identify and assess issues, trends, and developments related to the implementation of counterterrorism-related resolutions. The CTED team began its visit to the United States on April 26, and will meet with officials across the U.S. government from April 30 to May 3 to discuss the measures the United States is taking to counter terrorist threats.
