Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo met with UN World Food Programme Executive Director David Beasley on April 9. On Yemen, the Secretary and the Executive Director emphasized the need for parties to implement agreements made in Sweden and continue working to advance the political process in order to end the conflict and bring peace, prosperity, and security to all Yemenis. The Secretary and the Executive Director discussed ongoing U.S.-World Food Programme cooperation to relieve Yemen’s dire humanitarian situation, especially by addressing the population’s food security needs. On North Korea, the Secretary and Executive Director Beasley discussed the World Food Programme’s initiatives to provide nutrition assistance to children, mothers, and disaster-affected communities. The Secretary and Executive Director also discussed the situation in Venezuela, and the difficult humanitarian circumstances forcing millions of Venezuelans to flee their country in search of basic necessities, including food and medicine. The Secretary will travel to Cucuta on April 14, 2019 to see the humanitarian efforts being undertaken on behalf of the Venezuelan people.
