Samsung to feature in-screen fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy Note 9 says KGI analyst

Korean smartphone giant Samsung emphasised on an innovative design with their flagship Galaxy S8 series earlier this year, forcing the placement of the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device. KGI Security analyst and reliable tipster, Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted in a report that Samsung will feature an embedded fingerprint scanner into the screen of the Galaxy Note 9, expected in mid-2018.

Kuo states that despite Qualcomm's recent unveiling of an in-screen fingerprint scanning technology at the MWC Shanghai, Samsung's Galaxy S9 will not feature the technology. This is attributed to technical problems faced by the company's current fingerprint IC supplier Synaptics.
The report claims that Synaptics' optical fingerprint solution is challenged with issues pertaining to the optical layer, making it difficult for the Korean company to catch up with the mass production timeline for the Galaxy S9.
In terms of competition in 2017, Samsung set the tone for the year with the Galaxy S8 series in terms of a near bezel-less display which it calls the 'infinity edge' display. With a similar design language expected in the upcoming Galaxy Note 8, it will continue to carry a capacitive scanner on the back of the phone, in order to accommodate the large bezel-less display.
The LG G6, released before the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ also came with a wider 18:9 display which forced the capacity fingerprint scanner to be moved to the back of the phone.
Samsung's arch-rival Apple is also reportedly working on a 3D facial recognition technology for its 10th-anniversary edition of the iPhone which will replace the existing home button and TouchID.
The Galaxy Note 8 is set for launch on 23 August in New York ahead of Apple's new iPhone series, allowing more time to Samsung to implement an optical fingerprint solution.
